Jan 31, 2007· Detailed How To – McBride. This guide will cover prepping and painting of steel, aluminum, plastic, and acrylic plus more. I''m sure some people will think some of the steps are not necessary and quite extensive compared to some guides.

This is the best product for metal preparation before painting. Its basically phosphoric acid which changes iron rust back to iron. You can apply this to rust and it will change back to clean steel, you then paint. You can use this as primer and paint directly over it. When dry it has bonded to the metal.

Because anodized aluminum is slick and nonporous, it just doesn''t hold paint very well. However, if you need to paint over anodized aluminum, there are a couple of preparation techniques you can employ that will allow you to achieve an attractive, longlasting finish.

Oct 01, 2019· A mill finish is typically the finish a material has as it exits the mill where it is processed. Most metals, such as aluminum, are polished after they leave the mill. Apr 26, 2008· I''ve never painted anodized aluminum before, I just finished a small project using some anodized 1/2" plate and was just wondering if a general purpose automotive primer would hold suitably to it. I could skim the anodizing off with a face mill if need be as it''s not dimensionally critical. If ye say that it holds well I''ll skip that step however.

I think there''s an oxymoron in there, Josh. Mill finish aluminum is not anodized because anodizing is an electrolytic secondary finish. But all metal must be pretreated if it is to be painted, and a chromate conversion coat (Mil C5541, Alodine, Iridite) is probably the .

After the application of a wash primer, one can apply either polyurethane, enamel or an acrylic paint on aluminum. When preparing to paint an aluminum surface, a conversion coating is required. This coating is sprayed onto the surface, allowed to sit and then washed off with water.

Surface Preparation Methods MINIMAL PREPARATION . For coatings requiring only minimal surface preparation, the surface needs to be prepared in accordance to SSPCSP 1 and SSPCSP 2 or SSPCSP 3. Tightly adhered rust, mill scale or previous coating can remain provided it cannot be removed by lifting with a dull putty knife using moderate pressure.

avoid grease spots and consequent paint detachment. Grit Blasting Grit Blasting is the preferred method of preparation, as it provides an ideal profile for good paint adhesion and removes surface corrosion. Ideally aluminium oxide grit should be used, and a suitable grade chosen to achieve a surface profile of 5075 microns (23 mils).

Painting Anodized Aluminum Because of the changes in our factory manufacturing sequence and production line, we are storing these parts for at least 13 hours before they are painted. In a management meeting, we discussed whether the storage of these parts before painting, or the anodizing is to blame for the paint adhesion problem.

May 20, 2012· Your paint peeling is a sign of poor prep. I think 400 is too fine for paint to get a "bite" into metal. Acid etch primer is more for corrosion prevention, but I am not sure if it helps on aluminum or not. I suggest a good roughing with 320 paper, a good epoxy primer. I use PPG CRE primer, it is an epoxy and an acid etch as well.
