ABSTRACT :This study dealt with the geotechnical and compositional characteristics of the kaolin deposits in Ifon area of Ondo State using a combination of methods including Xray diffraction analysis. The results show that kaolinite and quartz are the dominant clay minerals whilepyrophyllite, macassite, pyrite and gippsite occur in minor amounts.

Ifon, also in Ondo State was soaked in water for three days to dissolve the clay and at the same time to form a slurry. The resulting slurry was then sieved to remove dirt and other foreign substances using a sieve. More water was thereafter poured into the clay to form a slurry once again. This is then allowed to settle down for seven days.

Osadebe et al. (2011) also carried out chemical and mineralogical analysis of clay deposits obtained from Okada, Edo State, SouthWest Nigeria. The analysis was mainly done using XRay Diffraction and the results showed that silicon dioxide was more in abundant in the clays followed by aluminum oxide.

The materials that were used for this research included a raw clay sample collected from a huge deposit in Ikere–Ekiti, southern part of Nigeria, silica sand from Igbokoda, in Ondo State and high alumina cement (HAC) (Secar 71) from Vesuvius, South Africa.
